About Joan

Joan Mills Profile Photo

I worked in the NHS for over 15 years in acute services in A&E departments, intensive care units and community nursing. After my own three very different birth experiences I decided on a career change, and trained in complementary medicine. Firstly as a reflexologist specialising in maternity Reflexology, then Hypnobirthing “my lightbulb moment” and I also became a birth and postnatal Doula. My area of expertise and specialism now is in the antenatal and postnatal period preparing couples for positive birth experiences and supporting them as their doula on their journey to parenthood. I passionately believe the education and support I offer enhances women’s lives and couples experience of their birth.

Over the past 8 years I have had the pleasure of teaching Hypnobirthing to over 750 couples across Hertfordshire. I teach small groups in Harpenden in my beautiful garden room, at the Verulam Clinic in St Albans and at the Womb with a View clinic in Old Hatfield. I believe in creating a friendly, warm and welcoming environment for my couples to have fun learning about birth and the positive experience they will have.

Since my training as a doula with Michel Odent five years ago, I’ve supported 35 families through pregnancy, labour and birth and in the early postnatal period. As a Doula, I support and nurture women and families for whatever type of birth they are planning, from home water births, consultant led births, midwife led births and planned C-sections. Doula’s work alongside the medical staff, they do not take a clinical role or provide medical advice. Research has shown that having a doula at birth reduces the chance of a Caesarean section by 50%, reduces the need for pain relief, shortens labour by 2 hours and increases successful breastfeeding. (Bohren et al in The Cochrane Review 2017).

“If a doula were a drug it would be unethical not to use it.”

John H Kennell (Professor of Paediatric Medicine in The Doula Book, 2003)

My reflexology clients are made up of around 75% women who have fertility, pregnancy, labour and birth related issues. I run a busy practice from my home in Harpenden and I have been practicing as a maternity reflexologist for 17 years. Reflexology has been around for a long time and everyone loves it. With my years of experience and expertise, I help women with fertility problems, support them through IVF and help with unpleasant symptoms of early pregnancy such as morning sickness. I have developed my own bespoke reflexology, relaxation and breathing preparation sessions for labour and birth which I offer to all my pregnant clients.

I consider myself very fortunate to be doing such an amazing job which I love with a passion. If, as you are reading this, you would like to know more about me and how I can support you, your partner and your family, please feel free to get in touch or join one of my classes.
